We celebrated CH's belated birthday at Tonkichi Jap Rest. at Ngee Ann City yesterday evening. It was more than a year since we last visited this place. Its Tonkatsu is the best that I've tasted in Singapore. For the fact that it has been around in a place like Ngee Ann City for so long and another outlet in Suntec, it cannot be that far off in quality and pricing.
To add to the unique dinning experience, you have to grind your own sesame seeds in a small bowl. This final product is mixed with the house special 'plum sauce' that you dip your katsu or cabbage into. Very fragrant, very addictive !!
We ordered an array of appetizers while waiting for our main course.....It was only $3 per serving ! Have to order lah !
Next came the main course,the star attraction of Tonkichi !!! There's deep fired prawns, oysters, pork loin and pork chops....Topped with endless supply of shredded cabbage, and is free-flow !!! We ordered the standard plate for 3 person.
Though its deep fried, it so crispy and tasty on the outside, its so juicy and tender on the inside, not oilly at all !!!! Dipping them into the sourish plum sauce completes the heavenly sensation !!! It you prefer, there's the yellow mustard or tar-tar sauce for the seafood....
Come with the dishes, you also have the raddish pickles, boiled lotus roots, and a bowl of miso soup. We upgraded the miso soup to a bigger bowl of miso soup with pork slices and mushrooms and vege broth !!! Worth the 'upsize' man !!!! We ordered another set of Japanese Curry, because I just missed Japanese curry for a long while....
After over 2 long hours of eating and great company, we finally cleaned our plates...!!
I would strongly recommed this Katsu speciality restaurant for anyone who needs a katsu fix. But be warned, once you have tasted it, the others would be nowhere near....
The Mixed Katsu & Seafood for 3 cost $55, it comes with pickles, miso soup, free flow of premium Jap rice and crispy fresh cabbages. On average if you don't order other side dishes or alcohol, it about $20-25 per head for a decent meal there....
Be sure to call for reservations early, otherwise stand in the line to wait for a table. Its at Ngee Ann City Level 4.
